'What is needed today is a Church which knows how to respond to the expectations of young people. Jesus wants to enter into dialogue with them and, through his body which is the Church, to propose the possibility of a choice which will require a commitment of their lives. As Jesus with the disciples of Emmaus, so the Church must become today the travelling companion of young people….(Pope John Paul II)
The Conference will affirm and inspire the vocation of youth ministry within our parishes and diocese. As the Church is called to be the 'travelling companion' of young people, all of us, as members of the Church, have a role to play. The Conference will be an opportunity for us to step back and, through the facilitation and support of Bob and Maggie McCarty, look afresh at where we are and where we are going. Our pastoral ministry with young people in schools and parishes has been greatly affected by the post modern context.
Bob and Maggie will help us to survey the territory and identify elements of a new map for effectively responding to young people. We need a new compass - a motivating image that provides direction. The Conference will invite us to explore a map and compass for our youth ministry as we respond to the challenge of the Gospel in today's culture. |

| within the Catholic Church. He has been in professional youth ministry since 1973, serving in diocesan, parish, school, and community programs. His recent books are Thriving in Youth Ministry and The Vision of Catholic Youth Ministry: Fundamentals, Theory and Practice. Bob is also a volunteer in his parish youth ministry and catechetical programme. |
