More than one hundred young people from Newcastle, Sunderland and Hartlepool gathered for a Commissioning Service at the Youth Village on 24th June, all of them members of one of the recently formed Mini-Mission Teams which are active in our diocese.
The young people had responded to the invitation of the Youth Ministry Team to work with them in sharing the Gospel message with other young people and they were now invited to come back and share their story with each other, with YMT and with Bishop Seamus. Students from Sacred Heart High School, St. Cuthbert’s High School, St. Mary’s Comprehensive School, St. Anthony’s Girls’ School, St. Aidan’s School and The English Martyrs School described their experiences of going ‘on mission’ into their feeder primary schools sharing both the highlights and the challenges. Young people from St. Bede’s Lanchester and St. Robert’s Washington also participated in the event as both schools are preparing for missions in the autumn.
Bishop Seamus thanked and affirmed the young leaders and, as he commissioned them to go out again, he called them to be his ‘co-workers’ in the diocese. A barbecue and social time ended the celebration.

On 1st – 3rd July hundreds of young people from all over our diocese are once again gathering for 3 days to celebrate faith and life at this year’s Diocesan Secondary Schools’ Summer Festival.
This year’s Summer Festival will once again take place in Minsteracres in Co. Durham. Led by the Youth Ministry Team, the Summer Festival is an excellent opportunity for young people from different diocesan schools to meet up with other students and together experience what it’s like to be living life to the full.
Whether you’ve been at the Summer Festival in previous years or coming this year for the first time, we would like to hear from you. What are your fondest memories? What are you looking forward to in the Festival? Please post your messages below.
