Lost and Found: We’ve got loads! Ask a member of your staff to ring YMT Office immediately.

On 29th June – 1st July, more than 600 young people and staff from schools across the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle gathered at the Youth Village in County Durham for the Summer Festival. Massive marquees have been pitched on the fields of the Youth Village which will be hosting the annual festival for the first time in the Festival’s ten-year history.

The Festival, which is organised by the Youth Ministry Team (YMT), was headlined by Barry and Margaret Mizen, parents of Jimmy Mizzen. In 2008 Jimmy was stabbed to death near his home the day after his 16th birthday. Since that day, Margaret and Barry Mizen have spoken openly about their faith, the need for forgiveness and the importance of family and the Church. As well as a number of TV appearances, they also spoke at the Papal Vigil in Hyde Park and their story was broadcast across the world. Catherine McKinnell, MP for Newcastle Upon Tyne North and a former member of the Diocesan Youth Council, also spoke of how she is living her faith in today’s society.

Amidst all the celebration of the festival is a poignant moment for the Youth Ministry Team as we dedicate this year’s Festival to its founder Bishop Ambrose Grffiths OSB who died a couple of weeks ago. Bishop Ambrose guided the development of YMT with an unfailing commitment and, just before he retired as Bishop, he took the imaginative step of founding the Youth Village. We remember how proud and excited he was at the opening last July and humbled at having one of the suites named after him.

During the festival YMT showed a video of his life and works with young people. A portrait of Bishop Ambrose signed by YMT and the young people and school staff was presented to Bishop Seamus Cunningham who visited the Festival yesterday Thursday morning. On Friday at 11am the Festival came to a close with a Mass a celebrated by Fr Dermott Donnelly, Director of the Youth Ministry Team. The Closing Mass was coincidentally at the same time as the Funeral Mass of Bishop Ambrose at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Newcastle. This was missed by everyone in YMT but to commemorate this day special prayers will be said during the Festival Mass for Bishop Ambrose.

The young people gave their final ‘salute’ to Bishop Ambrose by releasing thousands of heart and butterfly shaped confetti to symbolise his heart for youth ministry and the new life it brings.

Note: The Photo of Bishop Ambrose which we signed was placed on a pillar near the altar of St Mary’s Cathedral. Check out the photo and listen to Bishop Seamus’ Homily here and Canon Barrass’ Homily here. YMT, young people and the Summer Festival were acknowledged many times during the services.

A special thanks to Apex Radio for sponsoring the radios used during the Festival and Phil Boyd, The Wedding Snapper for taking the photos during the Closing Mass and Confetti Release.
