Never gonna give you up…

No, it’s not Rick Astley sing-a-along time again.

It’s Lent,  It’s the time of the year when we catholics give up something in preparation for Easter – if you make it by Easter.

But what do we give up? I’ve known people who gave up up cakes and chocolates. Others breakfast and lunch altogether. While others stopped watching foolball or eastenders (never thought you’d see them in one sentence, huh?).

Have I got something to give up?

I can not give up watching footie cos I never watch them unless it’s the World Cup. I can not give up watching telly cos I seldom watch them anyway. I can not give up cakes and chocolates because I rarely eat them too. I can not give up tea and coffee cos i’d be having siesta (afternoon nap) all day long and Fr. Dermott wont be too happy with that. How about giving up using the computer, I thought? Oh no, I’m a computer artist I can not do that.

I’ve got nothing to give up!

Well I do of course. I’m just not being honest to myself that I have something to give up. We all have something to give up. Unfortunately, we can not brag to everyone what we need to give up. Antoine de Saint-Exupery writes in ‘The Little Prince’, ‘It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.’

If we are gonna be truly honest to ourselves, we all have something to give up. And it’s not cakes and watching football. It is what is essential. It is what matters most. It is there written in your heart.

Be honest. It’s Lent. Give it up.
